Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry of Jilin University was founded in 1952, was authorized as one of the first groups of programs entitled to award doctoral degrees in 1993, was evaluated as a provincial key discipline in 1994, and became the national key discipline in 2007. The cultivation of graduate students in Organic Chemistry has a history of more than 30 years. Through continuous exploration and summary, the discipline has formed a distinctive training mode for graduate students.

Organic Chemistry is constantly refining its research fields to face some basic research topics and technological needs in organic chemistry. Based on organic synthesis methodology and organic catalysis, supported by traditional covalent organic synthesis and modern supramolecular non-covalent synthesis, and guided by basic research driving application technology development, it promotes discipline development through interdisciplinary research, with emphasis on the following three aspects:

(1) Metal/Organic Catalysis and Chiral Synthesis Methodology

To design and prepare new metal/organic catalysts with high efficiency and high selectivity; to establish catalytic polymerization of metal complexes and catalytic synthesis of chiral organic molecules; to develop new methods and technologies for the synthesis of high-performance polymers; to explore the construction strategies and synthesis paths of functional natural products.

(2) Design, Synthesis and Properties of Organic Optoelectronic Materials

Design and synthesis of organic molecules with optoelectronic properties; research and development of functional organic materials with excellent luminescence properties, semiconductor properties, photoelectric conversion properties, stimulus-response characteristics; and the use of above materials to prepare high-performance optoelectronic devices.

(3) Construction and Properties of Organic Functional Supramolecular Systems

Some functional organic molecules are designed and synthesized, which are used as building units to construct functional supramolecular systems by utilizing the supramolecular interactions of the building units, and to study biological functional systems and optoelectronic functional materials based on the supermolecular structures.

Specific research topics of organic chemistry include: catalytic polymerization based on transition metal complexes, construction methods of functional chiral centers, design and synthesis of organic light-emitting materials with stimulus-response characteristics, synthesis and properties of high-performance organic light-emitting materials, construction of functional organic supramolecular assembly systems, etc.

Supported by the Department of Organic Chemistry and the State Key Laboratory of Supramolecular Structure and Materials, Organic Chemistry has formed a well-structured and innovative teaching and research team with a group of young and middle-aged teachers as the backbone of its professional work.

After more than 30 years of continuous exploration, Organic Chemistry has formed its own research characteristics and advantages, mainly reflected in the following three aspects: (1) Paying attention to interdisciplinary, mainly reflected in the intersection of organic chemistry and material science, life science, using organic chemistry methods and means to solve problems in materials or life science;(2) Focusing on important technological fields oriented to the country (such as energy, information, and other technological fields). The research direction of layout is mainly embodied in the research of photoelectric conversion materials and devices, green printing methods and technologies, etc;(3) Combining the classical covalent organic synthesis method with the new principle of supramolecular assembly to study the functional organic materials, mainly including the functional regulation of organic photoelectric functional materials and the preparation of supramolecular systems with biological functions by non-covalent synthesis means.
